As we reflect on all the events in Plaza Midwood last year, one standout occasion shines brightly in our memories: the 2023 Home & Garden Tour, proudly presented by The Jeff King Team. With Plaza Midwood taking center stage as the neighborhood with the most tickets sold and the biggest turnout to date, the tour was an undeniable success, drawing crowds eager to explore the eclectic mix of homes and gardens that define our beloved community. The 2023 tour featured 10 tour locations, each offering a unique glimpse into Plaza Midwood's rich tapestry of history and modernity. From charming homes built in the 1920s and 1930s, celebrating the neighborhood's 50th anniversary, to stunning contemporary residences, the tour captured the essence of Plaza Midwood's evolution over the decades. Let's take a look at some of our favorites....
Originally built in 1940, this charming former duplex has undergone various transformations throughout its lifetime. Now, it has found its ultimate purpose as the beloved abode of Christian, Christian, their faithful dog Django, and two feline companions—Frankie and Milo. When the couple and their furry entourage set their sights on moving to Plaza Midwood in 2022, fate smiled upon them the moment they stepped foot inside 1730 Thomas.
The home showcases several interior design trends, such as painted green kitchen cabinets, an accent wall adorned with wallpaper, and see-through cabinetry. The abundant natural light, lofty ceilings, and inviting "dueling" porches, perfect for indulging in some people-watching, instantly captured their hearts. While they have future renovation plans in mind, they've already infused the space with their charmingly quirky style. Passionate about good lighting and crisp paint, they've adorned the home with sconces and refreshed the original cabinets with a fresh coat of paint.
Their decor boasts a delightful blend of new pieces and vintage selections, including captivating vintage paintings. Their next ventures include updating plumbing fixtures, enhancing hardware, and adding new landscaping to further elevate their newfound haven. Eager to showcase their personalized sanctuary, they are thrilled to welcome friends and family to their new digs.
Constructed in 1940 by its original owners, Willis and Alice Henderson, this residence remained their cherished home until 2004. Initially encompassing a more extensive lot, the Hendersons generously deeded the rear portion to their son, who later built a separate dwelling facing Country Club Lane within the cul-de-sac. Subsequent owners embarked on renovations in 2005-2006, transforming the garage into a cozy family room while constructing a brand-new garage with an apartment above. Enter the Kincheloes, who became the proud occupants in 2007, sharing their abode with their furry companions, Fred the dog and Charles Barkley the cat.
Linda, the proprietor of Chinoiserie Squirrel, a vibrant pop-up interiors market situated off Central Avenue, infuses her eclectic taste into their home, sourcing antique, vintage, modern, and one-of-a-kind treasures.
During the tour, visitors were invited to explore the first floor, three inviting porches, and the guest apartment. The Chinoiserie Squirrel's pop-up sale usually alligns perfectly with the home tour every.
In the autumn of 2012, Patrick and Meghan relocated from Denver to Charlotte with their hearts set on Plaza Midwood. Seizing the opportunity, they purchased their home on Chambwood Drive without laying eyes on it beforehand. The following year, a transformative kitchen renovation took place, with walls coming down to cultivate a more seamless and welcoming atmosphere.
Deepening their roots in the community, they embarked on an ambitious expansion project in the spring of 2020, just as the pandemic unfolded. This addition yielded an extra 1,100 square feet of living space, featuring two versatile bonus rooms doubling as bedrooms, a Jack-and-Jill bath for their daughters, and a convenient laundry room.
Additionally, renovations relocated the master suite to the first floor, enhancing accessibility and comfort. With the recent addition of a pool and hardscaping in the backyard, Patrick and Meghan look forward to embracing and enjoying their meticulously crafted living spaces for years to come.
Next we head over to 1901 The Plaza, where the Blums acquired a quintessential bungalow in 2020 and turned it into a stunning family abode!
What began as minor renovations quickly evolved into a grand vision after a year of living there. Their ambitious project included renovations to the kitchen, laundry, office, and kids' bath, as well as the addition of a master bath and closet.
Maintaining the original details was a must; they kept the telephone alcove in the downstairs hallway, oak and pine hardwoods and had the windows and shutters restored. They’ve crafted a personal touch in their home by filling it with family heirlooms and meaningful objects they’ve accumulated from people they’ve loved, places they’ve lived, and trips they’ve taken together.
During the home tour, the kids' rooms and bathroom emerged as undeniable favorites among attendees. Their vibrant colors, whimsical decor, and thoughtful design captivated visitors, leaving a lasting impression.
Next we go to one of the most loved street in the neighborhood. Ashland Ave! Since 1995, Plaza Midwood has been Steve's cherished home, and in 2010, after careful consideration, he and Dean made the decision to rebuild on the same site. Their new home, completed in 2012, pays homage to the original bungalow's charm while incorporating modern amenities. Inspired by their love of travel, gardening, and art, the house and yard reflect Steve's and Dean's passions.
Inside, contemporary art blends seamlessly with antiques, complemented by Dean's collection of blown glass and an array of North Carolina artwork and mementos from their travels. While the front yard boasts a neat, formal appearance, the backyard is a lush oasis, reminiscent of a tropical paradise.
Steve's childhood fascination with palm trees is evident in the 20+ palms adorning the landscape, alongside banana trees, perennials, and a thriving cutting garden. Amidst the challenges of recent years, their home and gardens have become a sanctuary, providing solace, stability, and shared happiness for Steve and Dean.
As we look ahead to the future, we're thrilled to announce the upcoming 2024 Home & Garden Tour, set to take place on May 3rd & 4th, once again proudly sponsored by The Jeff King Team. Stay tuned for more details as we prepare to showcase the best of Plaza Midwood's homes and gardens yet again. The excitement is palpable, and we can't wait to share it with you all!
